  The front end loader on my John Deere tractor has less "lift" than I would think - could it be a leak?
  

  I don't know if I'm just hitting the max power on the loader or if there is a problem - but I would think hydrolics backed by 90 horse should be able to lift the world!
  I've checked the fluid levels and it appears to be fine.

  There are a couple things that could be the problem.... the first thing I would look at is the filters... plugged filters restrict flow and can reduce lift capabilities due to internal pump cavitation. Second is the port pressure relief valve. On JD products its located under an acorn nut on the spool (control) valve. If you make any adjustments to it remember this... only turn it in a 1/4 turn at a time in the clockwise direction. And last but not least... an internal leak... either in the lift cylinders or in the vanes or gears of the pump (depending on the year and model of the tractor). You can do a simple test on the system by lifting the bucket (empty) and see if it drops any over a ten minute period with the engine running... then do it again with the engine off.
