How to get more power from 6 hp engine?

i have a snow blower with a six horsepower four stroke Tecumseh engine that i know is not giving me all the power it is capable of giving. i want it to shoot ice and slush but it is not giving be enough throw power. it wont even shoot snow more than twenty feet. i have a 5 hp Tecumseh snow blower that can shoot slush and snow well over 50 feet. i use spray air system cleaner and fuel additive cleaner and got a little more snow throw but still no ice or slush. what else can i do to get more out of it? i am not wanting to spend a lot of money but i am capable of taking it completely apart to fix it.

On the back of the engine between the throttle control lever and the fan shroud there is a slot where a small blade screwdriver will fit into the "governor speed control". Try turning this tiny screw 1/4 of a turn at a time. A small adjustment will pick-up the RPM's of the motor so she'll throw snow like a "mother". If you have a carburetor with low and high speed adjustments, open the bottom high speed adjustment up 1/8 of a turn. If you're serious about a wee bit more horsepower remove the cylinder head and carefully pack modeling clay up in the combustion chamber, lay the head-gasket down on the block then the cylinder head. Slowely roll the engine over two revolutions and carefully lift the head back off. *Using a 0-1 depth micrometer find the real depth of where the valves indented the clay and jot that figure down. Now, roll the depth mike down through the clay to the surface of the aluminum cylinder head. Jot that figure down. You can safely remove 1/2 that difference of distance from the entire surface of the cylinder head. A machinest would have to mill it off or spin it off in a lathe. This would raise the compression enough so you should plan on using 89 - 93 octane fuel so the engine wouldn't detonate or spark knock. If you have the funds the engine block could be taken apart and the cylinder could be bored and honed .010 - .020 oversize with a new piston installed.

Please beware: I have an 8 horse Tecumseh on a two year old Toro 828 XLE that "lobs" dry snow at least 50 - 60 feet! Wet shop is an entirely different story. Particularly near the road where the salt and snow piles up from the snow plow. You must go slow and "nibble" at the wet sloppy stuff.

Let me know how you make out. You're my kind of guy. Too bad you don't live near Watkins Glen NY as there are four race engine shops who could bore the block, balance the rotating assembly, mill the head and possibly find a better camshaft for the motor. We have 115 octane Sonoco leaded race gas around here also. Why not go whole hog and install a bigger motor on your snow blower?
