It should have recommended type of oil in the owners manual... I know UI don't keep mine around either. You could try looking at the John Deere website or calling a reputable lawn mower repair place. If all else fails go for straight 30 it will say SAE 30 on the bottle.

As far as how much.. it should have a dipstick or if the filler hole is low on the crankcase it will be to the top of the filler hole.

Oil filter... It may not have an oil filter on it. Usually less than 20 HP doesn't. If it does you'll see a cylinder a little larger than can on the side of the engine. Mine, a craftsman is on the left side toward the back of the engine. Turn it left-loose, and after a few turns it will drop off.

Bore out the engine, get the carb opened up to take in more fuel, and get your cam reground to add more duration. Also a good valve job and port and polish will help the flow out as well.

Well the last time you got gas for it there may have been to much water in it. Yes, gas stations water there fuel. So try some different gas first. If it still does it then i recommend the following, put a new spark plug in, clean the air filter; make sure its good and dry when you put it back on, check and make sure the terminal on the battery are clean and tight. If none of that works then you have an electrical short somewhere. Good luck!

Seriously. Google "Antique John Deere parts" and you'll come up with the same results I did. But go to the Yesterday's Tractors site anyway, and just pitch your question there - there's a good chance somebody there will have exactly the parts you need and sell it to you at a fair price. We're all bitten by the same rustyironitis virus, we watch out for each other.
