Good Idea. The car is good no doubt. The engine has garnered nothing but praise and the new convertible hardtop is just good too. I don't suppose you'd have any trouble with the new hardtop, in fact hardtop convertibles are supposed to be better because of more strength and less road noise. In the end the car is great itself, it is just up to you whether you like the look. In my case if I were looking for a convertible in the $50k range I would choose this one.

To replace a fuel pump, water pump, battery is one thing when someone doesn't know what they are doing. But to replace a gas tank by a person with no experience is asking for problems.

A mechanics shop in my town allowed a rookie to change a tank out at the shop. That shop blew up later that day and killed 2 people. When I worked at Lexus and they were removing a gas tank. EVERYONE in the service area had to leave while only 2 mechanics did the work.

An empty gas tank is like a bomb. The last person you want touching a bomb is a person with no experience.

If the tractor worked only several weeks before, I assume it was on regular unleaded gasoline.
The gasoline density (both old and new, ie leaded and unleaded) varies between 71 and 79 percent of water, which can't explain the problem.
I'd first double-check the float integrity and/or get another (new) float.
A workaround might be to find/make a new float with better buoyancy, such as polystyrene or similar, gas-resistant material.
If the carb manufacturer still exists, try to contact them for some good advice.
