you shouldn't have to change your idler pulley unless it is making noise or it is wobbling back and forth. to change the belt you need to loosen your tension pulley, it will probably slide toward the fire wall of the car. if the bolt loosens turn the other way. you do not want to take that pulley off unless you are ready to catch the tension spring. It is a easy job and I personally would not take it to a shop

I own a few MTD tractors - I like the tractor, just hate the deck setups. Id suggest removing the deck again and start over. It mightve been a good idea to take pics before removing it the first time- but its too late.
Okay, my White LT12 is similar ( still an MTD product) - it has 4 'legs' that come down, with a 5th 'adjustment leg' and a plate in the back along with a seriously heavy duty spring. Everytime ive removed the deck- i have a serious time trying to put the dang spring back on - it hooks waaay back at the rear axle.
Deck is out from under the tractor, lower the engagement/lift arm all the way down- check for any binding in these arms- they tend to 'stick' alot. I suggest greasing the moving points and the plate assembly tward the rear.
Make sure the belt is run the correct way , thru pulleys, idlers, ect.
I jack up the front of the tractor ( since the arms hang so low) - then slide the deck back under. Hook up all the pins and lower back down, attach the plate/spring and lift the arm to off position, try cycling the lift assembly to make sure nothing binds.
It should work now. I had a few times where the arms would bind or twist and screw up the deck hieght/engagement.

Kohler engines often will backfire when shutdown suddenly or by accident.

You may well have flooded the engine and pouring fuel into the cylinder won't help. remove the spark plug and see if it is wet.

With the spark plug removed and with the fuel supply cut off crank the engine to help evacuate the excess fuel. Dry the plug, reinsert and try to crank engine. If this doesn't help you may have to wait until fuel clears.

If your engine is equipped with a fuel shut-off solenoid, you can prevent this from occurring in the future by being certain to set the throttle between half and full throttle before turning the key switch "off."

Sure you can do it with the deck on. It is good to take the deck off once in a while to be able to look at everything closely. As an example I just had a bracket that was welded to the deck come loose the other day. Without removing the deck I wouldn't have seen it until it broke completly. It gives you a chance to really clean things up and look it over.
