The first thing to do is NOT CRANK IT OVER. Before cranking it remove the spark plug. When you say that it came in through the air cleaner I will assume that you drove it off into water or thin mud. If not, check that your cooling system isn't leaking through a blown head gasket or elsewhere. After removing the spark plug, crank the engine over for a while without the air cleaner on until it stops spitting watter or mist out of the spark plug hole. It would probably pay to replace the spark plug, as well as the air filter. Before putting the spark plug back in, find an oil can an put a squirt of oil in the cylinder (because it is a 2 stroke most of the lubrication will be gone after having water in the cylinder). Then it should be ready to start; it may crank over for a while, but as long as nothing else is wrong it should run.

I'd say 6 months to a year maybe. I have a hepa filter and take it out and use the vacuum cleaner to clean dust from the filter. I think it lasts longer that way.

look man. theres only one way to judge when your air filter needs changed. and thats the climate you live in and or how much time you spend off road but i doubt thats ur case, the only way you can tell is to take the filter out and look for yourself. if the filter is ok then why fix whats not broken right. also check for any intake leaks but with 16k miles i dont think you have a problem there.
